6. Explaining the text, in which there are three parts: the statement, the explanation, and the conclusion. In the explanation there are two: first, clarifying material giving; later, from 'observing' downward, clarifying the giving of Dharma. In the former, Master Yifa of the Northern Terrace said: first, clarify the essence of the practice; later, from 'when the bodhisattva cultivates the joyful practice' downward, purify and regulate this practice. Another interpretation divides it into three: first, clarifying that the practice accords with principle, so that one rejoices for oneself with joy; second, from 'the bodhisattva cultivates' downward, satisfying the desires of beings so as to cause others to generate joy; third, from 'free from all notions of self' downward, clarifying the departure from the three wheels so as to accomplish the pāramitā of giving. In the first part, there is first the explanation and then the conclusion. In the explanation there are three: first, directly performing the practice of giving; second, setting aside what is to be abandoned; third, revealing what is sought. In the first of these, there are three: First, 'the donor': the eighth fascicle of the Abhidharmasamuccaya-bhāṣya says, 'Being a great donor reveals the meaning of giving repeatedly. Because it becomes one's nature through habitual practice, being repeatedly able to give, one is called a master [donor].' 'Renouncing all' explains and reveals the meaning of being a master, which is the giving of open hands with liberation and renunciation. Second, 'with an impartial mind,' etc., represents the meaning in the treatise of giving without partiality. Third, the practice achieves great joy, hence it says 'without regret'. Second, what is abandoned is the intention free from defilement in the Abhidharmasamuccaya-bhāṣya. Within it are four phrases: 1. Not anticipating a recompense of material wealth in the future; 2. Not seeking fame in the present; 3. Not expecting superior rebirths among humans or gods in the future; 4. Not craving offerings and support in the present. Third, regarding what is sought: since one does not seek retribution and so forth, for what purpose is it done? The ten phrases below reveal this intent: 1. Rescuing from present poverty and suffering; 2. Gathering them to turn towards the Path; 3. Benefiting them to cultivate the practice of renunciation—the above three gather sentient beings through giving material things; 4. Emulating what was practiced in the past by all Buddhas, which is the beginning of one's own share; 5. Right mindfulness, which is the end of one's own share; 6. The beginning of superior progression; 7. The end of superior progression—the above four are acting in accordance with beings; 8. Broadly revealing this practice so that others practice giving; 9. Expounding while practicing, so that others receive and learn it; 10. Concluding the intention of transmitting it—the above three benefit beings through practice.
