Third, distinguishing the two baskets: that is, the śrāvaka basket and the bodhisattva basket. The first establishes the three-basket teaching based on the lesser capacities of the śrāvakas, explaining the principle, practice, fruit, and so on of the śrāvakas; this is the śrāvaka basket. The second establishes the three-basket teaching based on the great capacities of the bodhisattvas, explaining the dharmas practiced by bodhisattvas, and so forth; this is the bodhisattva basket. The fourth fascicle of the *Mahāyānasūtrālaṃkāra* says: 'Due to the distinction between the higher and lower vehicles, these three baskets are further spoken of as the śrāvaka basket and the bodhisattva basket.'
