Eighth, Dharma Master Jizang of the Tang dynasty established three kinds of teachings as the three wheels of the Dharma: 1. The root wheel of the Dharma, namely the Avataṃsaka Sūtra, which was expounded first. 2. The branch wheel of the Dharma, namely the Hīnayāna and others, expounded afterward. 3. The wheel of the Dharma that gathers the branches back to the root, namely the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka Sūtra, expounded after forty years as the teaching that turns the three into the one.
