Sixth, the gate of the non-obstruction of principle and phenomena also has two meanings: first, that all teaching dharmas in their entire essence are suchness, without obstructing the distinct differences of phenomenal marks; second, that suchness in its entire essence constitutes all dharmas, without obstructing the serene equality of the single flavor. The former is like the waves being identical to water without obstructing the marks of motion; the latter is like the water being identical to waves without losing its wet essence. One should know that the principle here is also like this; therefore principle and phenomena blend without obstruction, being solely the single, non-abiding, non-dual dharma gate; the *Vimalakīrti Sūtra* extensively reveals this meaning. Furthermore, this sūtra states: "Knowing that non-existence is existence, existence is non-existence; non-mark is mark, mark is non-mark." This is precisely because existence fundamentally takes non-existence as its being; therefore this existence is identical to non-existence. The noble teaching conforms to this non-obstruction of principle and phenomena; contemplating it, this can be seen.
