Sixth, the phenomenal name: the designation "Huayan" is called gaṇḍavyūha in Sanskrit. Gaṇḍa means miscellaneous flowers, and vyūha means magnificent adornment. Tripiṭaka Master Divākara stated: "In the Western regions there is a distinct article of offering called a vyūha. Its shape has six tiers, broad below and narrow above, adorned with flowers and jewels, and within each tier a Buddha image is installed." Truly, because the six stages in this sūtra are stacked tier upon tier, and at stage upon stage one realizes Buddhahood, it exactly resembles that object; hence this name was established. It should be understood that the eight assemblies among humans and devas also resemble it.
