Sixth, "abstaining from harsh speech", also called "abstaining from coarse and wicked speech". In the treatise, first is abandonment of the fruit-actions, which directly abandons coarse and wicked speech. In the sūtra text of the treatise there are sixteen kinds of speech; here there are four kinds of speech: 1. "coarse and rough", which is speech that harms others, because it can cause others to become angry; 2. "bitter", which is speech that pains others; 3. "wicked", which is vile and wicked speech; 4. "ruining oneself and ruining others", when one already has matters of identical aspiration and joy, ruining oneself and causing others to be ruined. The remaining kinds of speech are as in the treatise. Second, abandonment through antidote, namely "benefiting and soothing speech" and so forth, comprising twelve kinds of speech. This sūtra omits them; they are fully revealed as in the treatise.
