Tenth, the gate of non-obstruction: In the Hīnayāna, worlds are only phenomenal marks, above which there are merely principles such as suffering, impermanence, emptiness, and non-self. In the Three Vehicles, the dharmatā-land is only principle, and the rest are all phenomena; however, in the above two traditions, principle and phenomena are neither one nor different, which is termed 'non-obstruction'. In the One Vehicle, there are briefly ten levels: 1. Non-obstruction of sentiment and phenomenon: manifesting in response to sentiment, the phenomenon transcends sentiment. The text says: 'Like an illusion without fixed location, all arise from false conception.' 2. Non-obstruction of principle and phenomena: completely identical to the true nature, yet the characteristics of the lands are distinctly evident. The text says: 'The dharmadhātu cannot be destroyed, the lotus world-ocean,' and so forth. 3. Non-obstruction of mutual entering: as the text says, 'Filling the ten directions with a single buddha-land, the ten directions enter into one with nothing left over,' and so forth. 4. Non-obstruction of mutual identification: as the text says, 'Immeasurable worlds are identical to a single world,' and so forth. 5. Non-obstruction of repeated manifestation: seeing all lands within a particle of dust, and within the dust inside a land seeing lands likewise, repeatedly in this manner like Indra's net. 6. Non-obstruction of host and retinue: for any single world, there must be all [others] serving as its retinue. 7. Non-obstruction of essence and function: a single ocean of lands must possess great function, meeting capacities and expounding the Dharma. 8. Non-obstruction of the concealed and the revealed: defiled and pure concealed and revealed, different kinds concealed and revealed, and so forth, which can be understood as determined according to conditions. 9. Non-obstruction of time and place: manifesting the kalpas of the three times in a single land, or manifesting immeasurable lands in a single thought-moment; such is non-obstruction. 10. Non-obstruction of formation and destruction: formation is destruction, destruction is formation, and so forth; unimpededly manifested, sovereign and difficult to fathom, transcending sentiment and deliberation. These ten non-obstructions are simultaneously complete; one should harmonize and interpenetrate them through the upāya of the six aspects. The meaning of the ten worlds is briefly differentiated in this way; the remaining nuances of meaning will be revealed in accordance with the text.
