First, on determining the Buddha's body: Question: What kind of body is the Buddha of these eight assemblies? Answer: Some explain that it is an emanation body (nirmāṇakāya) Buddha, because attaining awakening through the eight aspects beneath the bodhi tree is the emanation body; ascending to heaven without leaving is a further emanation; and Śākya is an alternative name for Rocana, not a separate reward body (saṃbhogakāya). Others explain that the Buddha expounding this sūtra is the true reward body, because it is Rocana's dharmadhātu body and resides in the Padmagarbha pure land. Below, at the beginning of the seventh assembly, praising the Buddha as having those twenty-one kinds of superlative virtues refers to the true reward [body]; it is merely that because it does not depart from emanation, it extends to beneath this tree, and is not an emanation body. Now, explaining this Buddha based on the text below: it is the body of the ten Buddhas, pervading the three realms, because what is seen prior to the stages—when expounding the ten faiths, the three stages of the worthy, and so forth—is not the true reward [body]. However, residing in the Padmagarbha [world] is not an emanation, and the body of the land and so forth are not the previous two [bodies alone], for it fully subsumes the previous two, their natures being harmoniously integrated. It completely possesses host and retinue like Indrajāla; hence, it is solely the body of the ten Buddhas that completely pervades the dharmadhātu.
