First, the quantity of the number of the assembly: in this first assembly there are fifty-five assemblies. From Samantabhadra to the Maheśvara assembly, there are thirty-four assemblies. Again, from Sāgarabuddhi back to Samantabhadra, there are eighteen assemblies; combining these with the preceding makes fifty-two assemblies in total. The inner assembly of Sāgaramati, together with those newly gathered from the ten directions and the Varaghoṣa assembly, combined with the preceding makes fifty-five assemblies in total. In the second assembly, there are the two assemblies of the new and the old, which combined with the preceding makes fifty-seven assemblies in total. The third and fourth assemblies each have two assemblies of heavenly kings and bodhisattvas, which combined with the preceding makes sixty-one assemblies in total. In the fifth assembly, within the "Chapter on Ascending to Heaven," there are fifty-two assemblies and the cloud-gathered assembly, which combined with the preceding makes one hundred and fourteen assemblies in total. In the sixth assembly, there are the two assemblies of co-arising and differently-arising beings, and one assembly in the seventh assembly, which combined with the preceding makes one hundred and seventeen assemblies in total. In the eighth assembly, there are the three assemblies of bodhisattvas, śrāvakas, and heavenly kings, which combined with the preceding makes one hundred and twenty assemblies in total. Among them, each takes the dust motes of ten Buddha worlds as measure; such are all without limitation. However, this is provisionally stated with respect to the eight assemblies in this single world. If connecting through all worlds of empty space and the dharmadhātu in the ten directions, each possesses these boundless assemblies, mutually entering in layered multiplicity, inexhaustible like Indrajāla, which is ineffable and ineffable. These are called the assemblies of the Avataṃsaka ocean-assembly.
