Second, explaining the names, also has three [parts]: First, the name of the section is the 'Section on Cultivating the Cause to Accord with the Fruit and Generating Understanding'. This means cultivating the perfect causes of the five stations and accomplishing the full fruit of the ten bodies, causing all bodhisattvas to understand these marks. That is, it generates an understanding of cultivating the cause to accord with the fruit, which is a tatpuruṣa compound. Second, the name of the assembly: in terms of place, it is called the 'Assembly in the Hall of Universal Light'. However, there are three explanations: 1. Because the hall is composed of jewels, its light shines universally. 2. Because the Buddha emits universal light within it. 3. Because the Buddha preaches the universal Dharma-gate within the hall, the light of wisdom illuminating the world; hence its name is established. According to the first meaning it is a tatpuruṣa compound; the latter two are bahuvrīhi compounds. In terms of the Dharma, it is called the 'Assembly of the Practice of Faith'. Third, the chapter title has already been explained in 'The Tathāgata's Manifestation of Marks' chapter. Invoking the essence is called 'name' (míng); expressing the virtue is called 'designation' (hào). Names are particular, while designations are shared in common. All buddhas in common possess the ten designations, whereas their names, such as Śākyamuni and so forth, are different. 'Tathāgata' is one of the ten. The chapter directly speaks of establishing specific names in accordance with the capacities [of beings] and with reference to virtues. Since it is a name that expresses virtues, it is both a name and a designation. The 'Name and Designation of the Tathāgata' is a tatpuruṣa compound.
