Eighth, from 'Accomplishing worldly knowledge...' onward, clarifies the practice of shame and remorse (hrī and apatrāpya). From 'Knowing the times...' onward, directly reveals the marks of the practice. 'Times' are of three kinds: first, the time of mindfulness, such as being in a time suitable for cultivating concentration and so forth, without a single moment of interruption; second, the times of day and night, keeping the mind attentive by day and neglecting nothing throughout the beginning, middle, and end of the night; third, the time when what is undertaken must not be broken off, which is the measure of wisdom, meaning measuring what one's capacity is able to do, both cherishing and spurring oneself, so as not to overextend and subsequently abandon it. Using these three times, one cultivates the preceding eight practices of benefit for self and others; the sleeping serpent of defilements does not mix [with one's mind] day or night, and one adorns oneself with the garments of shame and remorse.
