Fourth, from "Son of the Buddha…" onward explains the gathering [of minds]. Depending on sovereign compassion, because of being mindful of sentient beings, one gives rise to ten kinds of minds. These ten can also all apply generally to all [sentient beings], but the treatise takes their specific marks to correspond to eight kinds of sentient beings: 1. toward sentient beings of evil conduct, causing them to abide in good conduct, hence called "benefiting"; 2. for suffering sentient beings, causing them to attain peace and happiness; 3. toward hated enemies, having loving-kindness and not retaliating; 4. toward the impoverished and suffering, having compassion and desiring to pull them out; 5. toward sentient beings who enjoy pleasure, pitying their heedlessness; 6. toward non-Buddhists, gathering them to have right faith; 7. toward fellow practitioners, protecting them so that they do not regress; 8. toward sentient beings who have gathered all vows for bodhi, regarding them as oneself, because their vows are the same. The latter two minds also pertain to this class, but the latter are superior to the former: 9. observing those sentient beings who ride the Mahāyāna path and make progress on it, revering them as teachers; 10. observing those whose gathering of merits is fully complete, revering them as Great Masters.
