38.20

第二位果，亦有三果：初調柔果亦四，一調柔行、二教智淨、三別地行相、四結說地相。前中有法、喻、合。法中正起行內又更聞法得陀羅尼者，論云非得義持者，對勝顯劣，般若未現前故。所以得聞持者，得二難故。一地初十平等心，難得能得故；二地中樂出世間智、現世間智，此不住道難得能得故。此之二難對劣顯勝，故得聞持，不同三地唯世間聞持。喻中，真金硨磲磨瑩者，證智契如事為真金。教智光明能示現如事，猶彼硨磲。二「佛子菩薩住此難勝」下教智淨中，日月等者，論云「依阿含增長智慧光明勝前地智故。」謂勝前地珠光。餘文如前。

Second, the fruit of the stage also has three fruits: First, the fruit of malleability also has four parts: 1. malleable practice; 2. purity of instructional wisdom; 3. distinct practice characteristics of the stage; 4. concluding statement on the stage's characteristics. The former contains the doctrine, the metaphor, and the synthesis. In the doctrine, regarding further hearing the Dharma and obtaining dhāraṇī within the direct arising of practice: the treatise states that this is not obtaining the retention of meaning, showing inferiority against superiority, because prajñā has not yet manifested. The reason one obtains the retention of hearing is that one attains two difficulties: 1. At the beginning of the stage, the ten equal minds, which are hard to attain yet one is able to attain them; 2. In the stage, delighting in supramundane wisdom and manifesting worldly wisdom, which is this path of non-abiding that is hard to attain yet one is able to attain. These two difficulties display superiority against inferiority, and therefore one attains the retention of hearing, unlike the third stage which is purely worldly retention of hearing. In the metaphor, the polishing of pure gold and mother-of-pearl: realization wisdom matching suchness in phenomena is the pure gold. The light of instructional wisdom able to manifest suchness in phenomena is like that mother-of-pearl. Second, in the purity of instructional wisdom from 'Sons of the Buddha, the bodhisattva abiding in this Difficult to Conquer' onward, regarding the sun, moon, and so forth, the treatise states: 'Relying on the scriptures (āgama) to increase the light of wisdom, surpassing the wisdom of the previous stage', meaning surpassing the jewel-light of the previous stage.
