三宗趣者，應物修短為宗，顯窮來際無限為趣。以就同教，且積劣之勝；若就別教，則修短圓融故。

Third, the central theme and purpose: responding to things as long or short is the central theme, and revealing the infinite exhaustion of the future boundary is the purpose. For in terms of the Common Teaching, it temporarily accumulates from the inferior to the superior; but in terms of the Distinct Teaching, length and brevity are perfectly interpenetrating.
