Second, from 'associating with good spiritual friends' onward, two gates properly clarify the practices in the stage of preparing the ground. This gate clarifies associating with good spiritual friends in superior progress; the text headings indicate the internal while also manifesting the intent. In the enumeration, the first six are friends in phenomenal action, and the latter four are fellow practitioners who are not different. 'Seeking' means not seeking fame, gain, or faults. The twenty kinds of purity are the fruits of associating with friends in superior progress; thus it says, 'Arousing such a mind, one immediately attains [them].' These ten are precisely the prior passage's 'thoroughly penetrating, practicing in accord with Dharma regarding the meaning, remaining far removed from folly and delusion, and abiding securely and immovably.' In Sanskrit, *pariśuddhi*, which has two senses: 1. Universal purity, namely these ten kinds; 2. Utmost purity, namely the sixty-fourth passage below. In the enumeration, the first six are purity of the three karmas, the first three being purity of essence and the latter three purity of function; the next two are purity of the retribution of primary and accompanying fruit; the last two are purity of vows and practice.
