First is the first [part]. The term 'Bhagavat' (World-Honoured One) is in Sanskrit *bhagavat*; it encompasses six meanings, as stated in the *Buddhagūmi-śāstra* (*Fodi lun*). First is the meaning of sovereign mastery, because he is never bound to any afflictions. Second is the meaning of blazing glory, because he is smelted and purified by the fiery light of wisdom. Third is the meaning of dignified elegance, because he is adorned with the thirty-two marks. Fourth is the meaning of renown, because all supreme merits and virtues are perfected [in him] and there is no one who does not know it. Fifth is the meaning of auspiciousness, because all the world draws near to make offerings to him and all praise him. Sixth is the meaning of honored veneration, because he is endowed with all virtues and constantly initiates skillful means to benefit the world and bring peace and joy to all without remiss or abandonment. Here, by presenting the last, it encompasses the first; it also designates the person to indicate the teaching. Endowed with inexhaustible virtues, he is therefore called the Bhagavat.
