The fourth is the knowledge power of various inclinations (nānādhimukti-jñāna-bala), also called superior inclination. That is, whether giving rise to faith from another as primary, or contemplating dharmas as primary, developing inferior, middling, or superior inclination and delight is called "various superior inclinations," and is also called "desires." Desire means faith, joy, fondness, and delight—such as craving wealth and profit, being fond of fame, or being fond of concentration or wisdom, in diverse ways. The Tathāgata correctly knows them, causing beings to abandon impurity and increase purity. How does this differ from the preceding faculties? Faculties are understood in terms of the amount of wisdom formed in past lives; inclinations are understood in terms of presently arising differences in fond delights. A treatise states: "Illuminating the various faculties as primary, with diverse inclinations in various dharmas, is the knowledge power of faculties; correctly discriminating the differences in inclinations is the knowledge power of inclinations." This is evident in the text.
