8.12

第三偈即根勝劣智力。謂信等五根，此軟中上名為勝劣。於此正知，及能於彼如應如宜為說正法，即是作業。偈中三句往因，一句今果。

The third verse is the knowledge power of the supremacy and inferiority of faculties. That is, regarding the five faculties such as faith, their being inferior, middling, or superior is called "supremacy and inferiority." Correctly knowing this, and being able to preach the true Dharma to them according to what is appropriate and fitting, is its function. In the verse, three lines indicate past causes, and one line indicates present fruits.
