Second, the three gates from 'sustained by māras' onward distinguish external empowered practices. This is divided into two: this gate is the obstacle to be eliminated, and the latter two gates are the remedial practices. Now, as for the first: this is the empowerment of the obstacle of adversaries. Due to internal conduct contravening principle, external māras gain an opportunity; this is called being 'sustained'. Furthermore, conduct contravening principle is itself being sustained by māras. The first two [concern] negligence of mind and narrowness of aspiration; the next two, meager practice and stagnant understanding; the next two, abandoning vows and heading toward annihilation; the next two, accomplishing the small and abandoning the great; the last two, abandoning compassion and slandering the Dharma. Second, the two gates from 'sustained by the Buddhas' onward clarify the remedial practices. By leaving the perverse, one naturally accords with the correct. Therein, first is the Buddha, and second is the Dharma. Now, as for the first: it first concludes the preceding and introduces what follows; thereafter, from 'What are they?...' onward, it presents the main explanation, which is clear and understandable. In the second, sustenance by the Dharma: the first four are the four Dharma seals; the next two are general and specific conditioned arising; the next two are the Great and Small [Vehicles]; the last two are wisdom and abandonment. The above concludes the distinction of the consummation of causes.
