On the Commentary's "Seventh, the meaning of mutual entrance within the same essence," etc.: in the explanation there are three parts: first, explaining separately the meaning of the same essence; second, explaining together the reason for identification and entrance; third, directly interpreting this gate. Now for the first: as for "meaning the preceding single conditioning factor," this refers to the preceding second gate. Because the second is the fundamental "same essence" gate for this gate, just as one is originally one in itself, it is the fundamental one; responding to two it is the "two-one," responding to three it is the "three-one," and so forth; it is merely a single one, which forms a plurality in relation to others. It is also like a single person: looking toward the father he is called son; looking toward the son he is called father; looking toward the elder brother he is younger brother; looking toward the younger brother he is elder brother, and so forth; the single essence of a person has many designations. Now the fundamental one is like the single person, and the manifold ones are like the various designations.
