On the Commentary's "Sixth, the meaning of the mutual fusion of essence and function," etc.: in the text there are three parts: first, setting forth the principle with a brief explanation. Next, from "Therefore, being fully interfused" onward, laying out the headings to explain them individually to form the six propositions: first, taking essence to approach function; second, taking function to approach essence; third, essence and function both preserved; fourth, essence and function both eliminated—because essence and function interpenetrate and, their mutual determination being dissolved, identification and entrance share a single source, they are fully interfused into one flavor; fifth, forming the realm of understanding; sixth, forming the realm of practice—these are clear and can be understood. On the Commentary's "These three gates above," etc.: finally, concluding what they belong to.
