17.15

疏「古云此九會中大位問答總有五番」者，疏意存四，故舉古釋，以第五無大位問答故。於中二：先敘昔、後「古德以善財」下密示今意。意有其二，故但為四，一五無大位問故、二第五屬流通故，故云「今既判入流通，則前唯四。」第四應名依人證入成德分。

Regarding the Commentary's statement, 'The ancients said that in these nine assemblies, the questions and answers on the major stages total five rounds': The Commentary intends to maintain four; hence it cites the ancient explanation, because the fifth has no questions and answers on the major stages. In this there are two [parts]: first, narrating the past; second, from 'Ancient worthies take Sudhana...' onward, implicitly showing the present intention. The intention has two aspects; therefore, there are only four: first, the fifth lacks questions on the major stages; second, the fifth belongs to the transmission section. Therefore it says, 'Now that it is classified into the transmission, the preceding [sections] are only four.' The fourth should be named the Section on Realizing Entry and Fulfilling Virtues Based on the Person.
