18.24

疏「但悟我空未知我有」等者，謂敵體與菩薩相反，二乘知我空法有，菩薩知法空我有。然二乘所空之我，菩薩亦空，謂是我執。若無我法中有真我，菩薩知有，二乘不知。若但約二空，了我空與菩薩同，不了法空與菩薩異。

Regarding the Commentary's statement, "Merely awakened to the emptiness of the self, not yet knowing the existence of the self," and so forth: this means that their direct substance is the opposite of the bodhisattva. The two vehicles know that the self is empty and phenomena exist; the bodhisattva knows that phenomena are empty and the self exists. However, the self that is emptied by the two vehicles is also emptied by the bodhisattva—meaning grasping at a self. If within the phenomena of non-self there is a true self, the bodhisattva knows its existence, whereas the two vehicles do not know it. If treated solely in terms of the two emptinesses: thoroughly understanding the emptiness of the self is identical with the bodhisattva; not thoroughly understanding the emptiness of phenomena is different from the bodhisattva.
