Regarding the Commentary's words 'There is no virtue for which to praise him, how much more so the virtue of a bodhisattva!': this borrows the words from the 'Taibo' chapter of the Analects: 'The Master said: Taibo may indeed be said to have possessed supreme virtue. Three times he yielded the realm, and the people found no virtue for which to praise him.' The meaning is: since his virtue was extremely deep, they could not praise it. Taibo was King Wu's grand-uncle and King Wen's eldest paternal uncle. His younger brother was named Jili, who was King Wen's father. By rights Taibo as the eldest son should have succeeded to the lineage; knowing that his younger brother Jili would certainly give birth to a sage son, he yielded and would not accept it, feigning to gather medicinal herbs in Wu. Therefore it was supreme virtue.
