In the commentary on the "fifth, dhyāna": first, explaining the name. "Quietude" screens out a scattered mind; "reflection" avoids lack of wisdom, so that calming and insight are balanced. Second, from "namely takes" onward identifies the essence. Although samādhi is one of the object-determining mental factors, here it is spoken of in terms of concentration and does not extend to a scattered mind, so the three karmas are not mentioned. The Abhidharmasamuccaya states: "When the three karmas that arise are functioning freely, all types constantly abide peacefully." This extends to the three karmas, because it is explained in terms of function. Third, from "also has three kinds" onward discerns the characteristics. "Abiding peacefully" means abiding peacefully in blissful dwelling in the present life. Asabhāva states: "Free from views, pride, and so forth, attaining purity." "Inducing" means inducing supernormal faculties. "Accomplishing tasks" means accomplishing the tasks of benefiting sentient beings. Fourth, from "having induced" onward explains the text, taking the discerned characteristics above to explain the sūtra text.
