23.62

疏「別則初二」下釋別。先以竪釋別，諸位淺深故。言「此約橫論一切菩薩」者，結上別義。約所行位信住等異，即是竪論，約能行人。一一位中攝多菩薩，故云橫論一切菩薩。

In the commentary, from "Particularly, the first two..." downward explains the particular. First, it explains the particular vertically, based on the shallowness and depth of the various stages. The statement "This considers all bodhisattvas horizontally" concludes the above particular meaning. In terms of the differences of the stages of practice such as faith and abodes, it is a vertical consideration; in terms of the practitioners, each single stage subsumes many bodhisattvas, hence it is called horizontally considering all bodhisattvas.
