Regarding the commentary's statement, "If in terms of the interlocking [classification]": this corresponds to the third, the cause and effect of depending and arising; it is the fruit that is depended upon, and thus differs from the seventh, which expounds what is accomplished, because what is accomplished naturally belongs to the fourth, differentiated cause and effect. Commentary: "Because before entering the stages, their nature is not yet fixed..." downward answers the question above. The text has five sections: 1. the direct answer, that like a light feather they have not yet been able to enter the stage of right determination; 2. from "If so" downward, raising an objection by following the preceding trace; 3. from "However, expounding the Dharma" downward, resolving it by explaining the meaning; 4. from "The ninth assembly" downward, stating the four reasons; 5. from "Therefore we know" downward, concluding with its profound mystery. In the second, "expounding after concentration like the Innumerable Meanings Sūtra": this refers to the Lotus Sūtra, where the sūtra states, "He preached for the bodhisattvas the Mahāyāna sūtra named Innumerable Meanings, a doctrine for instructing bodhisattvas, of which the Buddhas are protective and mindful. Having preached this sūtra, he sat cross-legged and entered into the samādhi of the state of innumerable meanings, body and mind unmoving." If we express its meaning: "innumerable meanings" is the meaning of emergence; hence that sūtra states, "The innumerable arise from the one Dharma. That one Dharma is the so-called marklessness." The Lotus is the meaning of gathering in; hence that sūtra states, "Ultimately arriving at the ground of all-knowledge. After a long time, the World-Honoured One will surely preach the truth." Now, wishing to gather in, it first distinguishes emergence. If one knows that the three vehicles and myriad transformations arise from the true mark, they ultimately return to the one true mark; wishing to serve as the preface to the Lotus, he therefore expounded the Innumerable Meanings and entered into this samādhi.
