Regarding the commentary's "The first ground says" onward: second is citing scriptural testimony. The text has three points: 1. It says: "Within a single ground, the virtues of all grounds are fully subsumed." This is in terms of mutual subsumption within that very ground itself—one ground subsumes the ten grounds, and by using one as an instance for all stages, it is so for every stage. The above directly quotes the text. 2. It says: "Faith covers the ocean of fruition." This clarifies the mutual subsumption of the five stages. In the "Chapter on Xianshou": "even up to attaining consecration and ascending to the stage," and so forth; this is citing the meaning as testimony. 3. "At the moment of the initial arising of the mind, one immediately accomplishes correct enlightenment." This directly clarifies subsuming the subsequent by the initial. It covers two meanings: if one attains Buddhahood upon the fulfillment of the abodes, this is within the present stage itself, subsuming the subsequent by the initial; if it is the ultimate attainment of Buddhahood, this is viewing distinct stages in relation to one another, subsuming the subsequent by the initial. It is like the forty-two syllable gates, where the initial syllable A includes the final syllable ḍha. In summary, there are three meanings above: 1. taking up a single stage to generally subsume fifty-two stages; 2. taking up a single stage to subsume five stages; 3. taking up the initial to subsume the subsequent. There should also be the subsequent subsuming the initial, the initial and subsequent subsuming the middle, the middle subsuming the initial and subsequent, one subsuming all, all subsuming one, one subsuming one, and all subsuming all—contemplate this in accordance with principle. The above statement, "At the moment of the initial arising of the mind, one immediately accomplishes correct enlightenment," directly cites the sūtra text. The "Chapter on Pure Practice" says: "If bodhisattvas can correspond with such contemplation and practice, without generating dualistic understanding regarding phenomena, all Buddha-dharmas will quickly appear before them; at the moment of the initial arising of the mind, they immediately attain anuttarasamyaksaṃbodhi, know that all phenomena are the mind's own nature, and accomplish the body of wisdom without relying on another's awakening." Here it is only briefly cited.
