33.25

疏「喻以火輪」下，釋偈下半。疏有三意：初二皆喻上生滅門，而初就所知、二就能知。第三意喻上因緣門，然上法說因果對明，今合喻中能所對說。命為能依、心為所依，依心假立故，是因緣故。生公云：「如杖薪之火，旋之成輪，輪必資火而成照。情亦如之，必資心而成用也。以彼情依於心，類此命依於心。」

Regarding the commentary's "Illustrated by a wheel of fire" and so forth: this explains the latter half of the verse. The commentary has three points: the first two both illustrate the above approach of arising and ceasing; the first is in terms of the object known, and the second is in terms of the cognizing subject. The third point illustrates the above approach of causes and conditions: whereas the preceding doctrinal exposition contrasted cause and effect, here in the synthesized metaphor, the dependent and the basis are contrasted. Life is that which depends, and mind is that upon which it depends; because it is provisionally established based on mind, it is cause and condition. Master Daosheng says: "Like fire on a stick of firewood, rotating it forms a circle; the circle must rely on the fire to achieve illumination. Sentience is also like this; it must rely on the mind to achieve its function. Just as that sentience depends on mind, this life depends on mind by analogy."
