Regarding the commentary's "the agent and the experiencer are what is called the self": in the cause, the self is the agent (kartṛ), and karma is what is done (karman). In the fruit, the self is the experiencer (bhoktṛ), and retribution is what is experienced. Here it provisionally accords with the conventional terms of self and what belongs to a self. Thus the Vimalakīrtinirdeśa says: "There is no self, no agent, and no experiencer." For the Sāṃkhyas, the agent is merely the primordial nature (prakṛti), and the self is the experiencer and not the agent. For the Vaiśeṣikas, the self is the agent and also the experiencer.
