Regarding the Commentary's phrase "however, the defilement of the two vehicles is not true defilement" and so forth: this is from the second fascicle of the Nirvāṇa Sūtra, the "Chapter on Lamentation" in the Southern recension. "The Buddha rebuked the monks of the three cultivations, saying: 'Bhikṣus! Do not give rise to contentment with an inferior mind. Although you have now left household life, you do not give rise to yearning for this Mahāyāna. Bhikṣus! Although your bodies are clad in dyed kaṣāya robes, your minds have not yet been dyed by the pure Dharma of the Mahāyāna. Bhikṣus! Although you practice begging and your bodies pass through many places, you have never once sought the Dharma-food of the Mahāyāna. Bhikṣus! Although you have shaved your hair and beard, you have not removed the fetters for the sake of the correct Dharma. Bhikṣus! I shall now truly instruct you. I am now present, the great assembly is harmoniously united, and the Tathāgata's dharmatā is real and not inverted. Therefore, you should be diligent, gathering your minds with valor to crush all fetters.'" Explanation: this contrasts the Hinayana with the Mahāyāna; because they are not yet able to eliminate cognitive avidyā and be dyed by the wondrous Dharma of the emptiness of phenomena and its eternal presence, it is said thus. Regarding the Commentary's phrase "one of the five receptions": 1. "Come, monk!"; 2. the supreme Dharma; 3. the three refuges; 4. the eight respectful rules; 5. karmavācanā. Diverse commentaries differ, but most rely on these five.
