Regarding the Commentary's phrase "it is the root of the utmost virtue and conduct": this is the meaning found in external classical texts. Thus the Classic of Filial Piety states: "The Master addressed Zengzi, saying: 'The ancient kings possessed an utmost virtue and essential Way, through which the common people lived in harmony and high and low were without resentment. Do you know it?'" The commentary notes: "'Utmost virtue' is filial piety and fraternal respect. 'Essential Way' is embodying music. Thus, from the Son of Heaven down to the commoners, all must practice filial piety from beginning to end." Regarding "root of conduct": secular texts take filial piety as the root of all hundred conducts. Below, Buddhist teachings are cited in proof. The Bodhisattva Precepts also state: "Filially support teachers, the monastic Saṅgha, and parents. Filial piety is called the precepts, and is also called restraint."
