Regarding the Commentary's line: "It means that wisdom is foremost": above, it indicated the gist of the answer; below this, it explains it in detail. First, it explains and confirms the first point; second, from "there is never [a case where] solely by" downward, it explains and confirms the latter point; third, from "explaining the intermediate between them" downward, it explains the intermediate. In all there are five intentions: the first four are the four adaptations, and the last one subsumes them all. Now for the first: "adapting to the mind to bring delight" is the "adaptation to inclinations" below, and also the mundane siddhānta. Second: "adapting to the time to generate good" is the "adaptation to suitability" below, and also the individual siddhānta. Third: "because the hindrances to be countered differ" is the "adaptation to counteracting" below, also called the counteracting siddhānta. Fourth: "the entrance gates are different" is the "adaptation to meaning" below, also called the ultimate siddhānta. Siddhānta is translated here as "doctrinal tenet," which is the meaning in the Mahāprajñāpāramitā-śāstra. This is because the teachings spoken by all buddhas do not depart from these four.
