Regarding the Commentary's phrase: "Gratifying their minds": this means that if another person delights in practicing giving, one encourages giving; if they delight in practicing morality, one encourages morality, and so forth. This complies with the mundane world, following their inclination. As for "attaching to habituation from former lives," the mind may not necessarily delight in it, but because one practiced it in past lives, encouragement easily brings accomplishment. Just as if one practiced seated meditation in the past, now encouraging seated meditation makes it easy to attain samādhi. Inclination pertains to present desires, while suitability pertains to possessing the faculties. It is also like the son of a goldsmith being suited to count breaths, and so forth. Adaptation to counteracting is understandable. Adaptation to meaning refers to entering the ultimate truth through whatever dharma is appropriate. Some awaken to the Way through dhyāna, and some awaken to the Way through wisdom; this is because the six pāramitās and myriad practices are all doorways for entering the principle.
