34.47

疏「答意云眾生不見豈得云無」者，即同《淨名經》云「爾時舍利弗承佛威神作是念：『若菩薩心淨則佛土淨者，我世尊本行菩薩道時意豈不淨，而是佛土不淨若是。』佛知其意，即告舍利弗：『日月豈不淨耶？而盲者不見。』對曰：『不也。世尊！是盲者過，非日月咎。』『舍利弗！眾生罪故，不見如來佛國嚴淨，非如來咎。舍利弗！我此土淨，而汝不見。』」即其義也。

Regarding the Commentary's statement, "The reply's intention is that because sentient beings do not see it, how can one say it does not exist?": this is identical to what the Vimalakīrtinirdeśa-sūtra says: "At that time, Śāriputra, receiving the Buddha's spiritual power, had this thought: 'If when a bodhisattva's mind is pure the Buddha land is pure, then when our World-Honoured One previously practiced the bodhisattva path, could his intention not have been pure, such that this Buddha land is impure like this?' The Buddha, knowing his thought, addressed Śāriputra: 'Are the sun and moon not pure? Yet the blind do not see them.' He replied: 'No, World-Honoured One! That is the fault of the blind, not the fault of the sun and moon.' 'Śāriputra! Because of the sins of sentient beings, they do not see the purity and adornment of the Tathāgata's Buddha land; it is not the Tathāgata's fault. Śāriputra! This land of mine is pure, yet you do not see it.'" This is its meaning.
