Regarding the Commentary's "Sudden arising is also not true knowing," this explains the second line and removes the defect of the Northern lineage. The Northern lineage takes the non-arising of mind as the profound and subtle, so it designates the gathering of arisings as mind, and giving rise to mind to observe mind is precisely false conceptualization, hence it is not true knowing. Therefore, true knowing must forget mind and abandon illumination, where the paths of words and thought are cut off. Thus the Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra of King Pravarasena asks: "'How does a bodhisattva practice and train in profound prajñā and penetrate the dharmadhātu?' The Buddha told King Pravarasena: 'Great King! It is precisely yathābhūtam.' 'World-Honoured One! What is yathābhūtam?' 'Great King! It is being unchanging.' 'World-Honoured One! What is being unchanging?' 'Great King! It is so-called tathatā.' 'World-Honoured One! What is tathatā?' 'Great King! This can be known by wisdom, not expounded by words. Free from marks and signless, far removed from deliberation, transcending the sphere of vitarka and vicāra—this is called a bodhisattva practicing profound prajñā and fully penetrating the profound dharmadhātu.'" Explanation: Merely by knowing in accordance with this with a mind free of thought, one is identical with the Buddha's knowledge and vision. The sūtra says: "Yathābhūtam is precisely thoughtlessness"; using a thoughtless mind to see, hear, perceive, and know, one perceives and knows all phenomenal dharmas while the mind is ever tranquil: this is the tathāgatagarbha.
