34.65

疏「了別則非真知」下，雙會南北宗禪以通經意，此句即遣南宗病也。謂識以了別為義，了見心性亦非真知。《淨名》云「依智不依識」，謂分別名識、無分別名智，今有了別之識故非真知，真知唯無念方見。

Regarding the Commentary's passage from "Conceiving distinctions is not true knowing" onward, it reconciles both the Southern and Northern lineages of Chan to elucidate the meaning of the sūtra; this line removes the defect of the Southern lineage. It means that consciousness takes conceiving distinctions as its meaning, and clearly perceiving mind-nature is also not true knowing. The Vimalakīrti says: "Rely on wisdom, not on consciousness," meaning that making distinctions is called consciousness, while being free from distinctions is called wisdom. Here there is a consciousness that conceives distinctions, hence it is not true knowing; true knowing is seen only in thoughtlessness.
