Regarding the Commentary's "expounding the Dharma brings immediate retribution in the Śuddhāvāsa, sharp intellect, and keen wisdom" and so forth, these are all passages from the Dàzhìdù lùn. Fascicle thirteen of the treatise quotes the Aśokāvadāna: "King Aśoka constantly made offerings to the Saṃgha. There was a monk whose mouth had a fragrant scent. King Aśoka had doubts and tested it for verification, only then realizing it was natural to him. When asked about its cause, the monk answered: 'It is the fruition of expounding the Dharma in the time of Kāśyapa Buddha.' The king asked again: 'Is the fruition of expounding the Dharma only this?' He replied: 'This is merely the blossoming retribution.' The king asked: 'What is the full retribution?' Thereupon he spoke a stanza: 'Great renown, upright and handsome, / Attaining joy and veneration, / Majestic light like the sun and moon, / Beloved by all. / Eloquent with great fame, / Able to exhaust all fetters, / With suffering extinguished, attaining nirvāṇa— / Such are called the ten.' This is the fruit of expounding the Dharma."
