Regarding the Commentary's statement, "It also contains the meaning of the three stoppings": above it said that the mind merging with the buddha of nature is the stopping of resting, because the mind rests in the correct principle. Stopping and cutting off thinking and seeking is the stopping of cessation. Now, the Commentary's text for this verse, "the mind merges with the essential nature," is the stopping of resting; "whence could delusion arise?" is the stopping of cessation. Directly regarding the sūtra text, the essential nature is entirely suchness, which is the stopping that confronts non-stopping. That is, the dharmatā is neither stopping nor non-stopping, yet dharmatā is named stopping; hence it is called the stopping that confronts non-stopping.
