The sixth abode. Regarding the Commentary's statement "Furthermore, when there is clinging, one ought to disparage": The above was about not grasping at the characteristic of sound, so disparaging it is wrong; now it explains that it should be disparaged, for disparaging it accords with the principle. Regarding the Sūtra of the Deva Merchant Leader (Śreṣṭhīdevaputra-sūtra): That sūtra says: "Furthermore, he asked Mañjuśrī: 'If someone disparages what you have said, where will they go?' He answered: 'They will go toward attaining nirvāṇa.' He asked again: 'For what reason do you speak thus?' He answered: 'There is no one who does not disparage words and yet can attain holy liberation. Why is this? Within the holy Path, there are no names, phrases, or words that can be spoken or shown. If they do not disparage them, they will not be liberated.' He asked again: 'For what reason do you speak thus?' He answered: 'One who has already attained liberation cannot attain liberation again.'" Therefore it is said that where there is clinging, one ought to disparage. Relying on words to penetrate the principle, the nature of speech is empty, which is liberation itself; hence it is said, "In terms of principle, one ought to praise."
