38.44

疏「又權實方便」下，此中通有四義，對前正心以釋不退。上三義對前了法平等聲，如谷響故；此下一義對前在執應毀、就理應讚，故云「有無等言皆有在故」。從「佛則色相虛無」下，出有在之相。

Regarding the commentary's: "Furthermore, provisional and real upāya," and so forth, herein are four meanings in all, explaining non-retrogression in contrast with the preceding upright mind. The upper three meanings correspond to the preceding understanding that the sounds of dharmas' equality are like an echo in a valley; this following one meaning corresponds to the preceding notion that according to attachment it should be censured, whereas in terms of principle it should be praised, hence it says "words such as existence and non-existence all have their appropriate referents." From "the Buddha is empty and non-existent in form and characteristics" on down, the characteristics of having appropriate referents are set forth.
