39.9

疏「故不應言淨劣梵也」，此揀異釋。異釋云，淨行品劣，故名淨行。十住明梵，明知勝也。故今彈云：云何而得梵行清淨？梵行是其所淨，何得勝於淨耶？

Regarding the commentary's "Therefore one should not say that 'pure' is inferior to 'brahma'": this rejects a divergent explanation. The divergent explanation claimed that because the "Chapter on Pure Practice" (Jingxing pin) is inferior, it is named "pure practice" (jingxing), whereas the ten abodes explain "brahma" (fanxing), from which it is clearly known to be superior. Therefore it is now refuted: How can one attain the purity of brahmacaryā? Brahmacaryā is that which is purified; how could it be superior to purity itself?
