Regarding the Commentary's statement, "Now, the first is firmly maintaining [precepts] without violation, which is the first difficulty": This is the precept of difficult practice. According to the forty-second fascicle of the Yogācārabhūmi, there are three types: First, the bodhisattva who currently possesses great wealth, high birth, and sovereign preeminence, yet abandons such great wealth, high birth, and sovereign preeminence to fully receive the bodhisattva's pure moral disciplines; this is called the first precept of difficult practice. Second, if a bodhisattva encounters urgent distress or even faces the loss of life, they still do not diminish or breach the precepts they have received, let alone violate them entirely. Third, in all actions, postures, and mental activities, they constantly dwell in right mindfulness and are ever free from heedlessness, up until the end of life never making an error or lapse regarding the precepts received, not even committing minor offenses, let alone grave ones. Explication: Here it refers to the first; the subsequent two are fully detailed in the Commentary.
