Regarding the commentary's phrase “This is also the purified dhyāna among the nine”: *Yogācārabhūmi*, fascicle 43, states: “There are ten kinds: first, purified dhyāna through mundane purity free from all cravings; second, through supramundane purity without defilement; third, through preliminary practice; fourth, through the fundamental; fifth, through fundamental supreme advancement; sixth, through mastery over entering and abiding; seventh, mastery over re-entering after relinquishing dhyāna; eighth, mastery over supernormal transformations; ninth, free from all views and destinies; tenth, dhyāna free from all afflictive and cognitive obscurations.” All have the phrasing “purified dhyāna.” If correlated with the sūtra, it precisely corresponds to the ninth and tenth, as well as the first two, because they are free from the obscurations of defilement. However, the general meaning of purity is due to being free from the three wheels. The three wheels of concentration are: first, the cognitive object; second, sentient beings; third, afflictions.
