Regarding the commentary's passage from "Entanglements refers to the eight entanglements" downward, explaining this character "entanglement" (paryavasthāna): The commentary has five sections: first, explaining the eight names; second, analyzing their obstructing actions; third, explaining the general name; fourth, clarifying the ten entanglements; fifth, concluding indication. As for the initial eight entanglements, they are extensively treated in the treatises. Lack of shame and lack of conscience are extensively clarified in the chapter "Ten Treasuries." The remaining six matters appear frequently before and after. Second, from "The first two obstruct the precepts" downward: analyzing their obstructing actions. Fascicle seven of the Abhidharmasamuccaya-vyākhyā states: "When cultivating śīla, lack of shame and lack of conscience serve as obstacles. Because one possesses these two, one violates the training rules without shame." As for "the next two obstruct cessation (śamatha)": that treatise states, "When cultivating cessation, the two dharmas of torpor and sleepiness serve as internal obstacles, leading to sinking. When cultivating wisdom, the two dharmas of restlessness and remorse serve as external obstacles, leading to distraction." Explication: That treatise speaks in terms of two concordant obstacles, but the present commentary reverses this, because it speaks in terms of contrary obstacles: restlessness and remorse directly contravene cessation, while torpor and sleepiness directly contravene wisdom. As for "the last two obstruct equanimity (upekṣā)": that treatise states, "When cultivating equanimity, avarice and jealousy serve as obstacles. Because one possesses these, one's mind is frequently shaken within the gateways of stinginess and envy regarding self-benefit and other-benefit."
