Regarding the commentary's phrase “Kāśyapa did not hear the sound of nirvāṇa”: on the morning of the fifteenth day of the second month, the Tathāgata raised his voice and universally proclaimed to all: “Tonight at midnight, the Tathāgata will enter remainderless nirvāṇa. If anyone has doubts, you may all ask now, as your final questions.” Yet through the Buddha's spiritual power, that voice filled the trichiliocosm, and the myriad beings all arrived. But Kāśyapa did not hear it; only upon arising from concentration did he perceive the transformation of the world, and asking in astonishment, only then did he learn that the Tathāgata had entered parinirvāṇa. In the two incidents above: first, in concentration one could not perceive touch; second, in concentration one could not hear sound; hence we know they are inferior. Now, the bodhisattva knows skillfully, and is therefore exceedingly superior.
