Regarding the commentary's "Namely chickens, dogs, and so forth": the Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra, fascicle twenty-four, says, "Bodhisattva-mahāsattvas uphold the prohibitive precepts not for being born in heaven, not out of fear, and so forth, down to not receiving dog precepts, chicken precepts, ox precepts, or pheasant precepts, down to this is called the bodhisattva cultivating the third precept of the great nirvāṇa." Also, the Daśabhūmika-vibhāṣā, fascicle three, explains that in impure lands there are many non-Buddhists, including those who uphold ox precepts, deer precepts, dog precepts, crow precepts, and elephant precepts. Explanation: These are all evil prohibitive precepts upheld by non-Buddhists. Generally, through two causes, these false calculations arise: first, through the divine eye seeing sentient beings being born directly into heaven from chickens, dogs, and so forth; second, through improper cogitation falsely giving rise to these calculations. The Mahāvibhāṣā, fascicle one hundred fourteen: There were two non-Buddhists, one named Pūraṇa-Kauśika, who upheld the ox precept, and the second named Atirātra-Śreṇika, who upheld the dog precept. The two went at different times to the Buddha's abode, and exchanged various affectionate words of greeting. Then Pūraṇa first asked on the other's behalf: "This Śreṇika upholds the dog precept; having completed his spiritual cultivation, where will he be born?" The World-Honoured One told him: "Stop, do not ask." When he requested a second and third time, the Buddha with a compassionate mind told him: "Listen attentively. If one upholds the dog precept without defect or transgression, one will be born among dogs. If there is defect or transgression, one will fall into hell." Having heard the Buddha's words, he wept and sobbed, unable to contain himself. The World-Honoured One said to him: "I told you before: 'Stop, there is no need to ask.' Now indeed you harbor grief." Then Pūraṇa said: "World-Honoured One! It is not because this man will be born into the destiny of dogs that I weep. But rather, for a long night I have upheld the ox precept, and perhaps in the future it will also be thus! May the Greatly Compassionate One please explain it for me." The World-Honoured One told him: "According to the preceding dog precept, all these result from not understanding the true path." The Mahāvibhāṣā further asks: "How is upholding the pig precept, ox precept, or dog precept called being without defect or transgression?" Answer: "Entirely conforming to the rules of the ox, entirely conforming to the rules of the dog, is called being without defect or transgression."
