The commentary's "Fifth, the unconditioned" has six [sections]: first, explaining the general name; second, analysis and synthesis; third, explaining the text; fourth, distinguishing provisional and ultimate; fifth, identifying its essential nature; and sixth, concluding by demonstrating the purpose of hearing much. Now, the first: explaining the general name. From "The Yogācāra..." below, it cites proofs; as before, the two treatises correspond to the preceding two definitions. The Samuccaya states: "Because it lacks arising, abiding, and cessation, it is called unconditioned, for it does not fall into reckoning." This is what the chapter on Ānanda in the Vimalakīrti says: "The Buddha's body is unconditioned and does not fall into any reckoning." "Reckoning" is just the conditioned. The remaining definitions merely invert the conditioned above; therefore, the commentary concludes: "The general designations across the treatises do not differ in their main import."
