Regarding the commentary's statement, "In this way, virtue fundamentally does not arise": this is the real being existent; what is fundamentally existent is serene and does not arise. Deluded afflictions are fundamentally empty; being empty, there is nothing that can be extinguished. As for the statement, "Moreover, the burdens of defilement are tranquil and do not arise": this reverses the preceding "affliction is not extinguished" into "does not arise." "True virtue is serene and not extinguished" reverses the preceding "the real does not arise" into "is not extinguished." Previously, affliction was empty and had nothing to be extinguished; now, emptiness is tranquil and therefore does not arise. Previously, because the real has no beginning, it did not arise; now, because the real has no end, it is not extinguished.
