疏「此翻為調伏」者，準《刊定記》云「義翻為調伏。若敵對翻，正稱為律。」若素律師疏云「梵曰毘尼，或云鞞泥迦、毘那耶、鼻那夜，此等皆由梵音輕重不同，傳有訛略不得正名。正曰毘奈耶，此云調伏。」

In the commentary, “This is translated as ‘regulation and subduing’”: according to the Kandingshi, it says: “As a translation of meaning, it is ‘regulation and subduing’ (vinaya). If translated as an exact counter-term, it is properly called ‘discipline’ (lù, rules).” Master of Vinaya Su’s commentary says: “In Sanskrit it is vini, or binejia, binaye, binaye; these are all variations due to the light or heavy Sanskrit pronunciation, which have been corrupted and abridged in transmission and do not capture the correct name. The correct form is vinaya, translated here as ‘regulation and subduing’.”
